First responders continue to search for a missing 10-year-old Pennsylvania boy who became submerged while kayaking on Yellow Breeches Creek over the weekend.
Seven kayakers — three adults and four children — started the trip on Saturday, Aug. 10, from Sheepford Road, Mike Parker, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, said Tuesday. The group planned to exit the creek on private property about a mile to a mile downstream.
A few minutes after starting the paddling trip, the kayakers encountered heavy debris, Parker said.
Most of the group managed to escape from the stream, but the 10-year-old boy was pulled underwater and never came to the surface, Parker said.
Teams from six counties, including Berks, Lebanon, Dauphin and Lancaster, are assisting in the search, which has continued daily since Saturday.
So far, rescuers have searched a 1.5-mile-long creek that straddles the border between York and Cumberland counties, said Brandon Freistat, Fairview Township emergency management coordinator.
While recovery efforts continue, crews are currently working to remove an extensive debris field from the creek above a dam at the end of Limekiln and Slate Hill roads, Freistat said, adding that it is labor-intensive.
About 200 people were involved in the search, most of them volunteers, Freistat said.
Both Freistat and Parker thanked the rescue workers for their time and effort.
The authorities are asking the population to continue to avoid the area.
