PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — According to police, one person was killed in Philadelphia on Thursday evening after a driver made an illegal turn on Kelly Drive, causing a three-vehicle crash.

It happened around 3:30 p.m. when a driver of a Nissan Altima made an illegal turn on Kelly Drive and changed northbound lanes onto Reservoir Drive.

During the maneuver, a white Nissan Rogue was hit, causing a black BMW to skid.

According to police, a 41-year-old man in the Nissan Altima was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

At least five other people were injured, including the 45-year-old driver of the Altima, who sources said was working for Uber at the time of the accident.

The 45-year-old’s condition is considered stable, police said.

The accident caused Kelly Drive between Hunting Park and Fountain Green Drive to be closed for hours.

“I think when there’s a lot of traffic on this road, it’s not that bad. But it’s more like people accelerate a little more when there aren’t many cars on the road,” says Dane Mandato of East Falls.

We spoke to several people who were jogging or cycling in the area where the accident occurred, and each of them said it was not unusual for drivers to make risky maneuvers on that stretch of road.

Kevin McLaughlin, who frequents the area, says the city should consider additional safety measures, such as better signage to ensure drivers are always alert and vigilant.

“A little more barriers to force people to stay in their lane. Those kinds of measures would probably be good,” he said.

The victim killed was not identified.

No charges have been filed so far.
